I stay at the bleeding edge of technology for professional and research purposes, but I tend to be a late technology adopter, personally. I resisted buying a cell phone for years, and the one I have now is fairly low tech, compared to the new smartphones. I had a big, boxy Zenith television for ten years (a tube inside burned out sometime in early 2008, rendering everything blue onscreen). I didn’t even think of getting a printer/copier/fax/scanner all-in-one until this year.
So today I bought my all-in-one printer … and a webcam. I’ll be honest. Webcams still seem a little voyeuristic to me. All of the XXX “Come see my bedroom, big boy, but give me your credit card number first” websites that populated the Internet in the early 2000s made me think they’re for entrepreneurs of the fleshly kind. But times have changed, and they’re also a good way to keep in touch with family who I only see once or twice a year. Who knew?!
I’m not a Luddite, I love me some high tech gadgetry … I just am slow to buy it. I’ve honestly needed faxing capabilities for years, and the scanner will make life easier in many ways, too. I look forward to playing around with them all. Er … don’t worry, there won’t be any “Secrets from Mahesh’s Boudoir for $29.99/month” or anything like that … ;-)
(Just as a note, I bought an HP Officejet Pro 8500 and a Logitech 2-mp webcam … but check out cnet for reviews of tech that would best suit your needs.)
